 THE PARISH OF HORTON

Weekly Newsletter

Be still and know that I am God.

A reminder to folks, please, to respect the need for silence and quiet time before Mass, both during the week and on a Sunday. Silence is invaluable for spiritual preparation and prayer. We really must make every effort to leave space for respectful silence. Conversation disturbs other people’s prayers and disrupts the important opportunity we have to reflect on the truth of our spiritual encounter with God through Jesus Christ.

ABC (ANGLICAN BLYTH CHURCHES) exists to enthuse, inspire and encourage those Christian communities that we represent through corporate worship, fellowship, good communication and missionary activity. It’s as easy as ABC.
Society of Mary - The next meeting is almost on our doorstep, at Blyth Saint Mary’s this coming Tuesday, 19th February, at 7.30pm. There will thus be no need to book a bus, though we will have to sort out lifts in cars. Would those willing to take their car please make arrangements to pick up those who have no transport.

Foundations of Faith - The evening sessions looking at Christian Discipleship will begin again on Thursday, 28th February. After that, the remaining four sessions will be on Thursday, 6th March, Tuesday, 11th March (7.00pm), Thursday, 27th March, and Tuesday, 8th April (7.00pm). The Daytime Group will meet by arrangement.

Parochial Church Council - Tuesday, 4th March, at 6.30pm in the Vicarage. All with responsibility for APCM reports are reminded that these must be with Father Brian by no later than that date.

The Chrism Mass - As usual, on the 12th March, at noon, the Bishop of Beverley will be presiding at the Chrism Mass in Hartlepool, at which the Oils of Baptism and Chrism, and the Oil of the Sick are blessed, and where Bishops, Priests, Deacons and Laity renew their vows and commitment to God. Those wishing to book a place on the bus must pay a deposit of £5 by 24th February.

NB. THE ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY 30TH APRIL AFTER THE 10.00AM MASS. AS WITH PALM SUNDAY, THERE IS ONE MASS ON THE DAY.

Bishop of Beverley’s Chrism Mass

The Chrism Mass is to take place this year at Saint Oswald’s Hartlepool at 12 noon on Wednesday, 12th March. We have traditionally hired a bus to take us and usually enjoy a lovely lunch afterwards at the Marina. Anyone wishing to go must pay a deposit of £5 by no later than Sunday, 24th February. It will be strictly first come, first served, as the number of seats is limited to  only fourteen. The total cost of travel should be no more than £10

Walsingham Youth Festival
Saturday 19th April, 2008

Aimed at youngsters aged eleven upwards, the above event is a day of fun and activity at Ushaw College in Durham. Among others from Walsingham, Father Philip North, the Administrator, will be there, as will Bishop Paul Richardson. The cost is £10 including lunch. Advance Booking is essential to secure a place.  A coach is available at a cost of £5.50 per person.  Please see Father Brian, if there are any youngsters you know keen to go.

Walsingham Pilgrimage for Adults
Sunday 8th to Friday 13th June 2008

So far just eight people have signed up for the pilgrimage. At the very least, we need ten, because we will be sharing a coach again with the folks of Saint Paul’s Whitley Bay. Without an increase in numbers, the trip may well have to be cancelled. The Shrine has provided us with a price, and the sums have increased quite considerably, probably as a result of the new building work going on there. With ten people, this could mean as much as £280 per person, including transport. With fewer in number, this sum would increase, but with greater numbers in the party, it could go down. This is positively the last chance to sign up, so if you would like to go, please see Father Brian. It would be a great shame if the pilgrimage couldn’t take place, as we have managed it to sustain it for six successive years, so that it has now become part of the tradition of the parish.
